Location: flexible with travel - offices Glasgow, Durham, Warrington, Brighouse, Birmingham, Coventry and Derby

Salary: £90-120K plus package including generous Bonus and Car.

This is a strategic leadership role, suiting someone with design and build understanding and experience and a passion to continue to develop the design team as a centre of excellence for innovation and technical authority. The design team form a central pillar of the Company offering of agile, expert and responsible engagement with our blue chip customer base, where we focus totally on a solutions based approach to solving our customer challenges, whilst leading on viewing all that we do through a practical lens on ESG.

This role will shape the future of the design, engineering and environmental services across our water sector and will work collaboratively with the Account Directors and Business Development team to identify and implement fresh thinking.

You will be accountable for setting and delivering the annual budget and will be responsible for delivering the P&L performance. You will be commercially aware and will ensure you and your team maximise the performance of the services you provide. You will proactively seek out and secure new opportunities and explore the external market to identify new innovations and ways of working to support the business strategy.

You will provide strategic leadership to the senior team and engage with key stakeholders within the business and build key relationships with existing and new clients.

What you will be doing:

Leadership

  • Design and implement planning to support the overall business strategy.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationship(s), with regular reviews of performance, and proactively identify and manage risks and opportunities, where required escalate to internal/external stakeholders.
  • Lead and oversee the team to achieve project milestones and ensure activities are delivered on time, to cost expectations and quality. Communicate and delegate tasks, setting internal deadlines for projects to guarantee delivery is completed to the highest standard.
  • Maximise collaboration, adopting influencing skills and provide solutions through innovation and new ways of working.
  • Act decisively to rectify any adverse circumstances that may negatively impact the performance of the Programme or the reputation of the Company.
  • Ensure the implementation and adherence of Company's policies, values and ways of working are always adhered.

People

  • Develop and coach your senior team to drive the performance and engagement of their teams.
  • Proactively build and grow the team's skills and competences aligned to the skills matrix and the relevant professional body requirements.
  • Develop and adapt the organisational structure to best support future programme of work and align this to the team's capacity, capability and career aspirations.
  • Align hiring plans with future pipelines and skill requirements, applying rigorous selection processes.
  • Utilise succession and resource planning to identify and nurture talent.
  • Grow an engaged culture of high performance, continuous improvement, and service excellence.
  • Develop and maintain an outsource capability to compliment workload peaks and troughs

Finance and Commercial

  • Set the annual budget, deliver the P&L performance and report progress monthly.
  • Drive opportunities for profit improvement by promoting professional excellence and delivering best practice across the function.
  • Deliver project commercial and financial performance targets through rigorous management of costs, billing and change control, and driving commercial best practice.
  • Forecast and monitor the financial performance of the function, providing regular reports, comparing actual and forecast performance to plan expectations, explain any variations and maintain accurate up to date forecast of WIP, Cash flow, debt, earned value, etc.
  • Authorise expenditure across the Programme within levels of delegated authority.

Customer

  • Identify and own key opportunities within the function and make resources available.
  • Work with the Business Development team to identify new opportunities.

HSEQ

  • Ensure compliance with all appropriate CDM duties
  • Prioritise exceeding HSEQ targets across the function.

Size and Scope:

You will be responsible for leading the successful delivering of the design, engineering, and environmental services. In 2023 revenue was £180m with a projected growth revenue target of £350m by 2026. This role will report into the Operations Director. The role currently has 5 direct reports and 100+ indirect reports. We have an ambitious recruitment and retention programme in line with our growth plans.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Ideally Chartered Engineer or equivalent qualification.
  • Member of the Association of Project Management.
  • Significant Water Sector experience
  • Relevant Safety qualification/training
  • Project Management (ideally with Prince 2 or APMP)
  • Leadership & People Management
  • Excellent client relationship

  • CDM Knowledge
  • Experience gained within a Design and Build environment.
  • Successful delivery of a major projects or programmes of work
  • Experience in managing and delivering P&L performance
